Overview

Photo Villa Olmi If you, like us, enjoy visiting cities more than sleeping in them, it’s pretty hard to beat Villa Olmi. A country estate less than six miles from Florence, it has a best-of-both-worlds setup — it even runs a free shuttle to the Renaissance City.

The foliage-framed swimming pool is in the cloister of Villa Olmi's main building, La Fattoria. But the 15-acre country estate in Bagno a Ripoli offers more than just easy access to the city, it also sits on the road leading to Chianti, the Arno Valley and southern Tuscany. Plus, the estate, which dates back to the 1400s and has been occupied by some of Italy’s most prominent families over the centuries, offers five-star service and a relaxed yet posh ambience.

Encompassing a number of historic buildings, Villa Olmi has the vibe of an aristocratic Tuscan country home. The 62 rooms and suites are spread across four structures and vary greatly in size, but all achieve a simple elegance with Florentine-style wood ceilings, limestone plaster, terra-cotta floors and original antiques.

Decadence shows through in the fine marble bathrooms, most of which have private Jacuzzis and classy toiletries, and on the comfortable beds, fitted with fine Egyptian cotton linens and feather-soft duvets. The common areas are even more opulent, with palatial ceilings, moldings, lots of marble and museum-worthy artwork.

La Fattoria is Villa Olmi’s main building and its heart. Most of the rooms and suites are located here, and in the cloister of the main building there’s a delightful foliage-framed swimming pool that overlooks a garden. La Fattoria also houses the innovative restaurant and wine bar Il Cavaliere. Run by a renowned young Italian chef, it dishes up traditional Tuscan specialties with a modern twist, and also hosts informal cooking classes and sommelier-led wine tastings.

What to do:
Taste Grapes. Sample the finest local grapes from the terrace of Le Volte, the house wine bar. Eat Chocolate. Caffe Rivoire, founded in 1872, is a historic spot for a chocolate fix. It’s famous for its thick artisanal hot chocolate. Enjoy a cup while sitting in the Piazza della Signoria. Hike to Ruins. The town of Fiesole, in the hills above Florence, is reachable by public bus and worth a visit for the historic villas, Roman and Etruscan ruins, and simply beautiful views. Art History Lesson. The Uffizi Gallery is the one Florence museum art lovers never get tired of. One of the oldest in the world, it houses some of the most important masterpieces of the Italian Renaissance. The Accademia is where you can get close to Michelangelo’s David in a historic museum designed by Giorgio Vasari in the 1500s.

What we love:
