Even for Italians, the town of Positano is a beautiful sight. Colorful houses, built stair-like up the slopes of the town, perch on the hillside overlooking the Gulf of Salerno. Il San Pietro sits among the hotels of Positano and isn’t a much kept secret, but it may very well be the best hotel on the Amalfi Coast and a contender for any “best of” lists in the world. Owing its name to the small, 17th-century chapel devoted to San Pietro at the entrance, the hotel’s property hangs upon the cliffside, boasting unrivaled views of the sea from every room. At the top of the Hotel, there’s a restaurant which offers traditional Italian meals along with stunning views, which is particularly romantic when the sun is setting over the water. The pool is carved into the cliffside and an elevator in the lobby provides a way down to the private beach with its own bar.

Il San Pietro di Positano, with all its luxuries, is not a budget hotel so be prepared to spend a little cash. Rooms start at $499 and up a night in the high season and $399 and up during the winter months when you can reserve a room. Rooms fill up quickly, so set your reservation earlier rather than later.
