Palazzo Manfredi

Palazzo Manfredi is an urban oasis at the center of Rome’s ancient chaos, right near the Colosseum and the Roman Forum. Designed by Maria-Renata Fimiani, the 16-room boutique hotel has been restyled as a contemporary villetta whose grandeur is less grand dame, more prestige cuvée.

The lobby sets the tone for the rest of the property with the feeling of a bad-boy bachelors club, with leather couches, 1960s abstract paintings and vintage toy racing cars. Fimiani’s playful personality is evident throughout the palazzo. Think Kartell tables, Ingo Maurer lighting fixtures, Venetian plaster and polished marble.

Thanks to high ceilings and long palazzo windows, the 16 guestrooms feel spacious, though they're all between 270 and 290 square feet. The design here is more contemporary than faux-ancient, and nearly all the elements have texture: fabric headboards, plush rugs and curtain tassels.

"Everything about this place was simply awesome: the location, the staff, the room, the Lamborghini in front of the hotel (although driving a Dallara in the streets of Rome is tantamount to suicide! Great stay! ♥ The restaurant (Aroma) was great, albeit a little pricey. However, that was to be expected, given the location and the reputation of the chef. ♥ It was more than we expected. The whole experience was great. The views, the personnel, the service. Everything was more than we could have asked for. It is a very cute hotel with an incredible location. ♥ The hotel was ideally located, had a beautiful breakfast included every morning, and the staff were the nicest people in the city. You can't beat the view off the rooftop restaurant - Aroma. The rooms were impeccable (big bed, big bathrooms, and marble everywhere), and extremely luxurious. ♥ There was a bit of street noise that interfered with sound in the evenings. The hotel's located near a major street that ambulances and police drive through at night. Request a room with a view of the Coliseum and you'll be fine."

Prestige Rooms have a contemporary, almost Gatsbyesque charm, with plenty of light and marble floors.The proverbial cherry on top is the terrazzo restaurant Aroma, which is enclosed in glass panels that offer a postcard-perfect view of the Colosseum. Chef Giuseppe di Iorio’s creative Mediterranean menu includes goat cheese flan with asparagus, toasted almonds and parmesan cheese shards; roasted loin of lamb with goose liver and pistachio stuffing; and green apple soufflé with rosemary sauce. Take advantage of the terrace in the early morning for a rooftop breakfast with a private sunrise view of the ancient amphitheater, for hotel guests only.

Palazzo Manfredi’s neighborhood is filled with boutiques, gelaterias, caffés and trattorias, but it also lies near the heart of Roman history. Overlooking the property’s entrance are the Oppio Hills, where the emperor Nero’s Golden Palace now crumbles, and Celio Hill on the other side of the neighborhood — beautiful for a stroll or an exploration of Nero’s now-underground nymphaeum. Manfredi’s back yard is the Roman Forum and the Colosseum, which means guests should dedicate at least one morning to a true walk through history.
