Nothing beats the Taj Mahal Palace.
I’ve grown up around that hotel and its a very special place. Nothing compares for atmosphere to the feeling of walking up the grand staircase.
For grandeur – Rambagh Palace in Jaipur is one of my favourites, but I love boutique, slightly off the beaten path places that are intimate, have character and are warm and here are some of my favourites:
India: Sawai Madhopur Lodge, Ranthambore – the sheer quirky irony of the architecture (this art deco building is shaped like a ship in the middle of Rajasthan) makes me fall in love with the place; Chapsley Hall, Shimla – its been a long time since i was there but who can forget breakfast with a grey talking parrot!; Khali Estate, Binsar – the view of the HImalayas is enough to take your breath away; Bamboo Banks, Bandipur – set amidst rolling tea and coffee estate in the heart of this elephant sanctuary, its laid back and OWNER DRIVEN! If he doesn’t like you, you dont stay…I could go on about India for a while…
Croatia: Villa Astra, Lovran – 7 rooms overlooking the Adriatic housed in a 100+ year old Austro-Hungarian villa.
Estonia: Three Sisters, Tallinn – 3 ancient houses literally intertwined to create quirky rooms each decorated with unique flair and charm – its a gem in the heart of the old city.
Czech Republic: The Aria, Prague – I love the musical theme and the sublime, contemporary touch in the heart of Mala Strana. Great location. Very different.
Brasil: Ponta dos Ganchos, Ganchos, Santa Catarina – incredibly tranquil, romantic, discreet.
1) beyond any doubt: The Four Seasons Jimbaran Bay, Bali
I kid you not, I wept when I had to leave.
2) Amankila, Bali
You gotta give it up for Bali when it comes to perfection in hotels
3) Amanpuri, Phuket, Thailand
I’ve only stayed in one of the 5 bedroom villas with a group of friends, so I don’t know what the individual suites are like, but, perfection is an understatement
4) Post Ranch Inn, Big Sur, California
shhhh. Quiet, peaceful perfection. Get re-acquainted with the quiet voice of your soul.
5) Hotel de Bucy, Paris
The perfect left bank fantasy. On a little cobbled street in St. Germaine-de-Pres, where there is a farmers market in the morning. The rooms are smallish and expect none of the George V or Ritz glitz… this is a little romantic fantasy from an old French film you remember as a child. Bring a woman here only if you want to fall in love forever.
The Mercer for NYC.
Sure you could stay at the 4 seasons or the the Mandarin for over-the-top grandeur, beauty, and luxury, and I’d not blame you. But if you want to experience NY like a New Yorker, stay in a real neighborhood, and really get the feel of the place, it’s the Mercer.
Hotel Bel Air for LA
The inconsistency here is that each bungalow is unique. So every time you stay, expect something different. Such lovely grounds. What a great place to wake up for breakfast.
Chedi Muscat Love how it’s come up so many times – absolutely deserves it.
Six Senses Yao Noi, Thailand – for the tastiest holistic detox ever.
Bamurru Plains, Northern Territory, Australia – incredible safari/wilderness
Islington Hotel, Hobart, Australia – small, perfect. Mind you, the managing couple has just left so will be interesting to see how it goes without them. Attention to detail was incredible.
The Balé, Nusa Dua, Bali – serenity plus
Adrere Amellal Ecolodge, Siwa – handmade from mudbrick on a lake tinged with pink salt beside the Great Sand Sea. Stunning.
Uma Ubud, Ubud, Bali – one of my all-time favourites, in the Christina Ong group
Zein-o-dinn Caravanserai, Iran – sure it’s cheap, but it’s a true experience on the Silk Road
The Explora Lodge, Patagonia, Chile – partly due to the location, but also the outdoor Jacuzzi facing the mountains and the service. Amazing.

2) Trisara, Phuket, Thailand
