One of the best resort in Italy is, without any doubt, Cortina.
It is cool, very nice and full of high society.

Verbier, St Anton, Selva Val Gardena, plenty of ski resorts to choose, all very good, it depends what you,re looking for and your skills………..
If you wanna combine ski and party, definitely Baqueira Beret or Sierra Nevada…….i dont think you can find many other resorts in Europe with that type of party/friendly environment
French Alps.. You can even take a break from skiing and shop in Milan by just passing through the Mont Blanc tunnel
Flaine, France…across the border from Switzerland. You can apres ski in nearby Chamonix.
Plan de Corones, Cortina, Marilleva …of course
Zermatt you have to find a place where you will be sure to find a lot of snow on march so… zermatt will be a good choice
Courchevel is the best in the French Alps!
If you are thinking about other places than Central Europe, then Norway is an excellent choice.

If you want a combination of skying and party you should definitely go to Ischgl.
I recommend Trofana Royal or Madlein for Hotels…

I am appalled at the replies, some of the places mentioned either plain SUCK, and/or are definitely not for beginners…
I am a seasoned snowboarder, and Verbier is Hard…
I would recommend Courchevel, Meribel, or my favorite Chamonix. Chamonix does have in my opinion the widest range of skill levels, and each mountain is completely different from the rest. I don’t know about driving to Milano to go shopping, the weather is nasty and not a pleasant drive in the winter…. And crossing the Mt Blanc tunnel alone is a 40 minute ordeal. But Chamonix itself is lovely with a wide selection of restaurants and shops.
If you’re looking for excellent skiing facilities and good fun when out and about, you should definitely go for Northern Italy. Plan de Corones is fantastic. Here’s a link to all you can find there
It actually highly depends from the closest place you will land, if you are flying into Europe.
I actually agree that switzerland is the best option, and here applies the above mentioned rule.
If you think of using Geneva as a landing option, verbier is great, but consider also Chamonix (offering at least five different resorts with excellent slopes) and Megève, both in France.
As per Austria, Lech and St.Anton are exquisite places too.
And, as half Italian, I feel I must push the Alpine option too: have you considered the Dolomites?
Cortina, absolutely!
Mont blanc and the valley of Chamonix (france, outside Geneva) are by far the best area to ski in Europe. The valley of Chamonix has 3 little villages all connected by bus or my km of ski slopes… you can start on one side and end up on another village pick up a bus and come back or simlpy use once agina the slopes.
Another good area in Europe is on the south of Switzerland (close to the border with italy) is Saint Moritz.
Alternatively you can try the Pyrenees either on the Spanish side (cheaper) places such as Baquiera/Beret and Cerler or the French side …
I recommend Austria, if you want to have fun…as Boris said Lech, St. Anton or Ischgl…besides the great slopes you also find good apres ski. Do not go to Kitzbühel, the slopes are not worth it nor is apres ski!
Outside Austria apres ski is not so great, but for the slopes I recommend Verbier. Also France has good slopes!
