Saint Mark’s Surrounded by the meandering Grand Canal, this quarter was extended over the centuries and is now the most important public space in La Serenissima. Saint Mark’s Square, the political and legal epicentre during the golden age of the Republic and described by Napoleon as “the most elegant salon in Europe”, was the only one worthy of being called a piazza, as the rest were just campi, or fields. The most sumptuous bars and some of the most expensive bars line this square, which is invaded by tourists at all hours. Portofino World, a world apart. | ||||
