Yachting and the cruise traffic
4.1 - The yachting.
A tourism component of the so-called "off-hotel" that fits smoothly into elite consists of Portofino by yachting distinguished itself in nautical tourism and recreational boating [40] To this regard, the port of Portofino is an area of the sea, equipped for a variety of recreational activities, the level of development mainly in income per-capita natural resources that the center offers, and the affirmation tradition "marinara "The local population. It also classified as "The Port of Refuge to category [41] "And almost entirely dock with the exception of a short stretch used for the call of towing small boats, technically has a mirror surface water of 30,000 square meters and yards to the ground coincide with the square where the development of the fronts of bringing 440 m, the depths ranging from 0.50 to 4.50 m (Fig.30). In 2003-2005, nautical tourism has seen a transit of about 1.350, about 718 units longer than 24 meters and then considered real cruise ships as capable of delivering a minimum of 5 to a maximum of 20 people including the crew. This boat registered with the records of the famous naval " tax havens " [43] as the Cayman Islands, the Marshall Islands, New Jersey, Panama, Bahamas, others come from Great Britain mainly from London and Southampton, followed at a distance from France and Italy itself, and even from Arab countries. The other 632 boats with a length of between 14 and 20 meters are mostly Italian, French or other European countries.
Even recreation nautical usually involves people on holiday in Portofino: This is for the more than Lombardi and Piedmont and some residents who rent or have in granting a buoy for their craft in this case due to lack of beaches in the village, the craft is used especially for bathing purposes. In the context of nautical Yachting, working in the village company [44] that offer services ranging from storage, supply of berths up to 18 meters, the operations of mooring and unmooring and thorough cleaning and maintenance. Moreover, during the summer these companies also hire the activities of vessels conduct without license.
Respect and continuity of tradition in a seafaring as Portofino, in an era where the first floor there are communication and digital, are also represented by a historic shipyard, where two "masters of ax" instead of devoting their lives to the art of construction of elegant wooden gozzi almost always commissioned by prominent personalities.
4.2 - The cruise tourism
The cruise is understood today as ship-hotel that moves according to a predetermined route and full of stations major tourist [45] ; Between the late nineties, figure Portofino, now in half the time of the largest and most famous cruise ships to international and national companies. The coastal, for ~, unlike Genoa, not equipped with a "Cruise Terminal" and therefore all the cruise ships dock in bay [46] From May to November almost every day one or at most four ships make a stop in the village, and staff will accompany the crew through the use of tender passengers who want to visit the center and shopping.
As in all major ports in Italy, the rise of cruise traffic accident in 1999 years in which to Portofino arrived well-113 cruise ships with 27,098 passengers generally cruise ships arriving in the morning and leave at 8 to about 18; while few are those who remain a full day. Also in 1999, the most prestigious transatlantic landed in the resort rivierasca was the Grand Princess, the company's Princess Cruises [47] Today the group Carnival, and the company's ships Star Clipper and Royal Caribbean. Not so brilliant was the season of 2000, characterized by a decrease of -14.1% in the number of ships over the previous year and a decrease of - 12.7% in the number of passengers, unlike what was predicted even at the Jubilee.
The year 2001 has seen a sharp upturn: traffic increased by 22.4%, with the presence of 125 ships and 36,865 passengers. Among the companies that have stopped once again include Royal Caribbean, the Renaissance, the Princess Cruises, The Norwegian Cruise Line (with the famous Crown Odyssey) the Crystal (with the Crystal Symphony), the Club Med and the Radisson Seven Seas Cruises (with the Radisson Diamond). And if the situation in 2002 remained almost unchanged in relation to the number of ships and passengers over the previous year, 2003 was the year rather more negative among all, in fact, recording a decrease in the number of cruise ships -- And 25.4% - 42.2% in the number of passengers.
We must also remember that some companies such as the Festival Cruises and Renaissance Cruises have suffered a serious crisis meeting even went to a bankruptcy process, linked to global events that led to a decline in services sold on board, to begin by hiking, and a variation their programs: the routes were changed and prices lowered.
2004 and 2005 once again recorded a sharp upturn in 2005 as home to Portofino call 120 cruise ships with a total of 33,000 passengers due to the downsizing of services offered on ships, large and ever more luxurious that encourage you to try this experience (Table 12 and Figg.31-32).
By comparing the years 2003 (more crisis) and 2004 (net of recovery) while there is a reduction of passengers from European countries such as Belgium, Germany and the United Kingdom, on the other hand, there are positive changes for France (38.1%), the United States (15.5%), in South Africa (33%) and Philippines (87.6%). In 2004 we also note the presence of other countries compared to 2003 as Spain, Polynesia, the Mauritius and China (Table 13).
To promote the cruise industry, since 2006 the section of the tourist town of Portofino is organizing meetings with all traders in anticipation of the next landing and stopovers by cruise ships in the bay of the village. It is studying the creation of a bilingual guide for the promotion and accurate information about local business, which will be distributed to board ships that may also be a good opportunity to establish and consolidate links with the agencies that manage land cruise market.
